University Avenue - Aung San Suu Kyi

On the banks of Inya Lake in Rangoon's Bahan township lies 54 University Avenue, the home of Burma's pro-democracy icon, Aung San Suu Kyi. She has been detained under house arrest in the crumbling lakeside villa for more than 14 of the past 20 years with only her live in maid to accompany her. She has been prohibited from having any visitors other than a monthly check up from her physician and occasionally UN envoys and members of the National League for Democracy. Barriers at each end of University Avenue often appear over night, restricting access to all vehicles and pedestrians. Many are too afraid to even drive down the road for fear of reprisals from the military regime.
