MAE SOT, THAILAND - 2009: The Mae Tao Clinic founded and directed by Dr. Cynthia Maung, provides free health care for refugees, migrant workers, and other individuals who cross the border from Burma to Thailand. People of all ethnicities and religions are welcome at the Clinic. Its origins go back to the student pro-democracy movement in Burma in 1988 and the brutal repression by the Burmese regime of that movement. RANGOON, BURMA - 11.08: Burma's democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced today to 3 years hard labour at the sham trial being held at Insein prison in Rangoon, Burma. The sentence has been reduced to 18 months house arrest and she has now returned to her house at 54 University Avenue - the site of the intrusion of the American visitor, John Yettaw, that caused her to be arrested on May 18th.full details...

MAE USU, THAILAND - 25.07.09: Karen refugees who fled Burma are now trying to survive in the temporary refugee shelters in Mae Usu, Thailand, just 2 kms from the border with Burma. More than 4,000 people were forced to flee from their villagers in Karen State, Burma in early June 2009 as the Burmese army and their local militia the DKBA (Democratic Karen Buddhist Army) launched a major military offensive against the KNLA (Karen National Liberation Army) attacking and burning down villages.full details...
